Awesome Sauce

Awesome Sauce

Think of this red sauce as the WD-40 of food.

For starters, Awesome Sauce can be used as a low carb BBQ sauce for chicken. There is no brown sugar, molasses, etc… so it may not caramelize in the same way that regular BBQ sauce will, but this healthy BBQ sauce alternative does give a nice char of it’s own that is lighter, tangier, and lip-smacking good.

Spread this tangy sauce on sandwiches or roll it into wraps for a unique flavor boost. I like to use it as a dipping sauce for veggies, and it makes a great sugar free alternative to regular pizza sauce, too.

Still need ideas? Stir this sauce into mayonnaise to make a healthy special sauce for burgers, garnish scrambled eggs with it in place of salsa, or serve it alongside Keto Mozzarella Sticks for some extra pizzaz. Top Ham and Cheese Meatloaf with Awesome Sauce instead of tomato paste for an extra special kick on cold winter evenings.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups crushed tomatoes
  • cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 chipotles in adobo sauce
  • 2 tbsp adobo sauce from chipotles
  • ½ cup grated yellow onion
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp 100 % organic powdered leaf stevia
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • ½ tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow to simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
  • Remove from heat. Use an immersion blender to puree the sauce until no large chunks remain. Don’t have an immersion blender? Allow the sauce to cool slightly, then transfer to a regular blender and pulse.
  • Transfer cooled sauce to a glass jar with a tight fitting lid and refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze until ready to use.
